What is Minecraft PE?
Minecraft Pocket Edition (or Minecraft PE or MCPE as it is commonly called) is the mobile version of Minecraft. Minecraft was created by Mojang AB.
As with the original Minecraft game, Minecraft PE is classified as a sandbox game. Sandbox games are open-ended, there are no pre-set objectives. Players are free to explore the game world and to do what they please. Techopedia provides a great definition of what a sandbox game is:
A sandbox is a style of game in which minimal character limitations are placed on the gamer, allowing the gamer to roam and change a virtual world at will. In contrast to a progression-style game, a sandbox game emphasizes roaming and allows a gamer to select tasks. Instead of featuring segmented areas or numbered levels, a sandbox game usually occurs in a “world” to which the gamer has full access from start to finish.
A sandbox game is also known as an open-world or free-roaming game.
Minecraft PE was initially released on the Xperia Play platform in 2011. Since then it has been made available on a number of platforms. Currently, Minecraft PE is available on:
- Amazon Fire OS 3.0+
- Apple iOS 8.0+
- Apple tvOS 1.0+
- Google Android OS 3.0+
