Several of Minecraft PE’s vanilla commands in version 0.16.0 require that you provide them coordinates. An example is the /tp (shorthand for the /teleport) command. For teleporting to a location you supply the x, y and z coordinates that you wish to go to. The syntax is:

/tp <destination: x y z> [y-rot:int][x-rot:int]

For any command, optional parameters are in brackets such as the y-rot and x-rot for teleporting. To keep things simple, let’s ignore those optional parameters and focus just on the required ones:

/tp <destination: x y z>

So, let’s say you are somewhere in the game and you wish to be able to return to it by teleporting back at a later time. Where the Java version of Minecraft has an optional overlay that shows your coordinates, Pocket Edition does not. You can, however, still find your location. Here are two ways:

Method #1: Find Your Location by Setting the World Spawn Point

A quick way to find your current location is to set the game spawn point to your current position. Doing so is very straightforward:

  1. Start a Minecraft PE 0.16.0 (or higher) game with cheats enabled.
  2. Click the speak or talk icon.
  3. To set your position to the new spawn point, type
    /setworldspawn
  4. Minecraft PE will show the syntax as
    /setworldspawn [spawnPoint: x y z]
  5. The parameters in brackets are optional and we don’t know them anyway. For our purposes, simply omit the brackets and their contents entirely.
  6. Hit enter to send the command.
  7. The command will respond by reporting back:
    You have been teleported to <current x>, <current y>, <current z>
  8. The values that appear for the x, y and z values are your current position.

Method #2: Find Your Location by Teleporting

This might sound like a contradiction as we’ve been talking about the fact that we need to know our coordinates so we can teleport. While that is true, Minecraft PE’s teleport command allows you to reference your current position for the x, y and z coordinates. To do so, you use the tilde character (~).

  1. Start a Minecraft PE 0.16.0 (or higher) game with cheats enabled.
  2. Click the speak or talk icon.
  3. To teleport with the shorthand command, type
    /tp ~ ~ ~
  4. Hit enter to send the command.
  5. The command will respond back:
    You have been teleported to <current x>, <current y>, <current z>
  6. The values that appear for the x, y and z values are your current position.
